Southall takeaway fined £6,800 for repeated food safety breaches

A Southall takeaway restaurant and its director have been ordered to pay a combined total of £6,800 after admitting multiple food safety failures. SAI20 Limited, operating as Abi Fast Food at 233 The Broadway, pleaded guilty to six offences at Uxbridge Magistrates' Court, as reported by the Ealing Times.

The case followed an investigation by Ealing Council’s food safety team. Inspectors visited the restaurant multiple times in 2025 and recorded a series of hygiene breaches. These included high-risk foods, such as meat curries, being stored at unsafe temperatures. Cross-contamination risks were identified, along with poor cleaning standards in food preparation areas.

Improvement notices ignored

The council issued improvement notices, legally requiring the restaurant to address the failings. A follow-up inspection found the notices had not been complied with. Staff were unable to answer basic food safety questions. Records intended to ensure food safety were either blank or incomplete.

A further inspection two months later revealed a more serious issue. High-risk food was not being properly refrigerated, increasing the risk of foodborne illness. Ealing Council confirmed the details of the case to the Ealing Times.

Fines and costs imposed

The magistrates fined the restaurant £2,000. It was also ordered to pay £4,000 in costs and an £800 victim surcharge. The total financial penalty for the business amounted to £6,800.

Velventhan Ganesalingham, the director of SAI20 Limited, was fined £600. He was additionally ordered to pay £1,180.70 in costs and a £240 victim surcharge. The Ealing Times reported the breakdown of the penalties.

The restaurant continues to operate at the same address. It is unclear whether further inspections have taken place since the court case. Ealing Council has not commented on any ongoing monitoring of the premises.
