Hugh Brasher, chief executive of London Marathon Events, said organisers are consulting boroughs along the route to reduce disruption. He told the BBC that the event team is identifying residents’ needs in advance, including access for carers and medical appointments. Brasher added that plans will be put in place to support those affected.

Simi Ghent, owner of Simi’s Italian Deli in Charlton Village, said the marathon’s impact on trade is unpredictable. She told the Local Democracy Reporting Service that last year’s event drew crowds away from the village, reducing footfall. Ghent said she has received little information about council support for the 2027 expansion.

Ghent said the deli, which opened this year, saw a drop in trade during the 2024 marathon. She added that customers tend to gather near Charlton House, leaving local shops with fewer visitors. She has not received updates about the 2027 plans, as reported by the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

What happens next

The Mayor of London confirmed in June that Greater London Authority officers are working with London Marathon Events and borough partners. The aim is to ensure the two-day format is carefully planned and communicated, according to a written response to Assembly Members. Greenwich Council has not yet responded to requests for comment.
