Around 60 firefighters and eight fire engines tackled a large grass fire near South End Road in Hornchurch on Saturday afternoon. The blaze affected approximately six hectares of land.

The London Fire Brigade received the first of seven calls reporting the fire at 1.18pm. Crews from Dagenham, Hornchurch, Wennington and surrounding stations were mobilised to the scene.

Tackling the blaze

Firefighters used backpack blowers to push flames back into burnt areas and wildfire beaters to reduce oxygen to the flames. A London Fire Brigade Terrain Support Vehicle was deployed to carry equipment and approximately 475 litres of water closer to the fire on the open ground.

The London Fire Brigade declared the fire under control at 3.22pm. There have been no reports of injuries.
