Comedian Jack Whitehall has revealed he auditioned for the role of Harry Potter but failed to impress the casting directors. The audition, arranged by his father, producer and talent agent Michael Whitehall, took place around 2000 when Whitehall was a pupil at Tower Park School in Richmond.
Instead of attending an open casting session at the school, Michael Whitehall secured a one-on-one meeting for his son with a casting director. However, the audition did not go as planned because Jack Whitehall had not read any of the Harry Potter books at the time.

Whitehall recounted the experience on Capital Breakfast, stating that when asked questions about the book, he attempted to improvise. He mentioned discussing 'Orks', a reference from J.R.R. Tolkien's works, which led to the casting director informing him he had the wrong book. Whitehall described this as 'tanking the audition'.
The role of Harry Potter was eventually given to Daniel Radcliffe. Whitehall expressed that his father was 'bitterly disappointed' by his performance, especially after arranging the private audition. Emma Watson was cast as Hermione Granger through the open casting process at schools.
