Harrow runs six libraries. Their hours are not uniform, and the pattern catches people out: five of the six are shut on Mondays and close at lunchtime twice a week.

Four Trussell distribution centres need a referral. Several community hubs do not.

Greenhill, at Perceval Square on College Road HA1 1GX, opens Monday to Saturday 10am to 6pm and Sunday 11am to 3pm. It is the only seven-day branch.

Kenton, 141 Kenton Lane HA3 8UJ, opens Tuesday and Thursday 10am to 6pm, Wednesday and Friday 10am to 1pm, and Saturday 10am to 6pm. It is closed Monday and Sunday.

Pinner, 78 Marsh Road HA5 5NQ, and Roxeth, on Northolt Road in South Harrow HA2 8EQ, follow the same weekday pattern as Kenton but also open on Sunday from 11am to 3pm.

The borough’s biggest sports venue came out of a £1.4m refurbishment this summer, on a new ten-year contract.

Stanmore, 8 Stanmore Hill HA7 3BQ, and Wealdstone, in The Wealdstone Centre at 38–40 High Street HA3 7AE, also follow the Kenton pattern and are closed on Sundays.

There is a seventh library that is not run by the council and is often left off lists: North Harrow Community Library, a charity at 429–433 Pinner Road HA1 4HN, open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 10am to 5pm.

Joining and borrowing

Membership is free to anyone who lives, works or studies in the borough, at any age — under-16s need a parent or guardian to sign. Bring proof of your signature and address. The card works across The Libraries Consortium, so it is good well beyond Harrow.

Members can borrow up to 25 items at a time. Books and CDs go out for 21 days, DVDs for seven with one renewal.

25 itemsWhat a Harrow library member can borrow at onceBooks for 21 days, DVDs for 7. Reservations within Harrow or the Consortium are free.

What still costs money

Books are free to borrow. CDs are £1.73 for three weeks and DVDs £2.75 a week. Overdue books are 35p a day for adults and 23p for concessions, and free for children. Overdue DVDs are £1.40 a day. A replacement card is £3.25, or £1.50 for a child. Reservations within Harrow or the wider Consortium are free.

Computers are free for the first two hours, then £3.25 an hour or £1.90 for concessions, in sessions of up to an hour and a maximum of two a day. The wifi is free but you need to be a member to log on.

What is changing

Roxeth Library has secured £110,000 from Arts Council England for a refurbishment due to complete in spring 2027. Roxeth opened in 1954 and was the first permanent library built by Middlesex County Libraries after the Second World War. Harrow is one of seven London library authorities to receive the funding.

One live caveat: the council reports that the Open+ system at Wealdstone, which allows entry outside staffed hours, is currently unavailable due to a technical fault. Normal opening hours are unaffected.
